Ask and You Shall Receive

Yesterday I received this email from our property manager at work:

“Many of you have seen Lydia here during the day as our day porter as well as at night.

Yesterday her husband died at home and she needs our help if you are inclined. She has no family and has no money for the funeral. If you would like to help, you can make out a check to Lydia or bring cash and give it to Lisa at the KW reception desk, she will take it to her.”

It’s amazing how situations arise when you ask for them. So my first $25 donation of the year went to our lady who cleans our offices. I had never known her name or anything about her because she only speaks Spanish. She does not understand any English except for a friendly hello. Even though we have the language barrier, she is one of the nicest people–always offering a welcoming smile.

I remember one instance when the lights went out in the whole building. We went outside our office to see if all the lights were off and check if everyone was okay. That’s when we heard someone’s muffled screams. There was someone trapped on the elevator who was crying for help; it was Lydia. I understood what she was saying, how she was trapped in the elevator and how hot it was getting. But unfortunately, I don’t speak Spanish; instead I found some who did. He tried to calm her nerves, telling her help was on the way. We finally found the maintenance guy, Manego (mah-nay-go), who was able to get the elevator doors open and help her out since it was stuck between floors. She was crying and shaking. All I could do was give her a hug.

Now I’m being given the opportunity to do lend more than a hug, a monetary donation toward her husband’s funeral. She has no other family. There’s no one else to help and afterwards, she’s going to be alone. It just makes you grateful for what you have…

Here’s another story to tug at your heart strings from Stay At Home Babe.

*UPDATE*

I just found out that my company also donated money to Lydia–$100. Proves that some people still care about the well-being of others.

Resolution for 2012: Late as Always

My resolution for this year is to be fit–financially fit. Well the other kind too, but I’m a slacker right now.

Anyway, I’ve been putting aside a little money for the past few pay periods so I get myself used to saving. It’s a lot harder than I thought it would be.

It’s my money, it’s right there. Let me just take a little bit out of savings so I can go splurge on.. Dammit, no! No, Ashley, NO! Or when I’m running a little low on funds, let’s just make a little transfer, shall we? Agh…

I know I shouldn’t touch my savings but in the past, these were my excuses for using the money that I had saved. I’m getting a little better. I guess that means I might be maturing–finally at 24 years of age.

Not only do I want to save money, but I want to help people. I know everyone is not as well-off as I am. Not that I’m well-off, but there are other people who don’t have the opportunities that I do or medical bills have taken a financial strain on them. I’m vowing to donate $25 every pay period to a charity or a family in need. I know it doesn’t seem like much, but it’s better than I was doing before–nothing. So I now owe $25 but I don’t even know where to start; I want to make sure that the money actually goes to people who can put it to good use.

What were your resolutions for the year and how are you doing?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Peaceful

I don’t regularly post the weekly photo challenge from The Daily Post, but this one caught my eye.

I recently took a picture that was peaceful to me.

Ah, the sun coming through the clouds. What can be more peaceful than that?

My Nanny would always tell me that whenever you see the sun rays shining down, that means God is performing a miracle.

So every time I see the sky looking that beautiful, I not only think of her but wonder, “What miracle is God performing right this moment?”

Being Sick Sucks

big hairy balls…

I won’t be sick if I can help it. I turn into this big baby. I become the most helpless, needy person… that’s not me at all. I’m always striving to be independent… blah, blah.

Anyway, yesterday I tried to make it into work.. which I did. For about 30 minutes. On my drive to work, I felt something creep up on me. I don’t know if it was a stomach virus or what. All I knew was that I felt like I had to throw up. Ladylike, I know.

I thought, after sitting at my desk and keeping still, I’d feel better. I didn’t. I went right back home and took a sick day (after emailing my bosses and letting them know of course).

I slept for another eight full hours, even skipping lunch. I’m feeling better today, even though now I have a cold. I don’t know where that came from..

So what freaks me out is that the night before I got sick, my ex-coworker had a dream that I had a baby girl with Mr. Hazel Eyes. She was with my mom in the waiting room.

Not only that, when I came to work with my queasiness, my coworker got a call from her friend that same night, with news of her pregnancy. She’s two months along and had no idea, especially because she’s on the pill. So my coworker ended up saying I had “morning sickness.”

Um, I don’t know if I’m ready for all that! I mean, if it happens, it happens, but I’m not going to intentionally try for a little one. Even though my friend just had her twins on Christmas Eve and another coworker had her baby on January 3rd and they are the cutest, most adorable babies I’ve ever seen in my life!

Okay, I admit it.. I have a little baby fever.

Football Friday!

Okay, the game isn’t until tomorrow, but there isn’t anything wrong with partying early! Amiright?!

GO TEXANS! We made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history! And luckily, this year is the first year I had season tickets. SCORE!

Our playoff game is at a different time, thank goodness! All the games this season were at 12 noon on Sunday. BUT, this weekend’s game is Saturday at 3:30 PM. Whoohoo! Now I don’t have to wake up before the crack of dawn to eat some fatty foods and drink some beer! Shout out to Bud Light for representing the Houston Texans!

Houston, Texas. The home of Reliant Stadium (and right next door is the Astrodome, which I still miss by the way.) Reliant Stadium is relatively young, born in 2002 and it has one of the first retractable roofs. It only takes about 10 minutes to open, but the decision is made well in advance of the football game according to the Open Roof Policy. This weekend it will be closed so we can be as loud as possible! Reliant Stadium houses the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Supercross and the NFL Houston Texans. It also hosted the Super Bowl in 2004. Yep, the one with Janet Jackson’s nip slip…

Here’s my boyfriend, Mr. Hazel Eyes, grabbing some comida. (That’s food in Spanish, for you gringos.) He can eat and eat and not gain an ounce! Not fair!

Oh, do you like the Reliant Center sign?! Those are new and I think they are the cutest!

Eating, drinking and playing some football. Tailgating at it’s finest. Port-o-potty’s are included.

Let’s do this!!
