FREE BEER!

Did I get your attention? Thought so.

This wasn’t on my bucket list, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do: go to a brewery. Just see what’s so special about beer and how they make it. Not all chicks like beer, but I’m one that does!

St. Arnold Brewery is just north of downtown Houston. I loved the old building–especially the details on the doors. The brewery is just waiting for us to step inside.

As we walked in, there’s a line. I wasn’t really sure what for or where it leads, but we got in line. Others followed suit.

Some people have food, drinks, games, six-pack beer carriers to recycle. I didn’t really know what to expect. Especially not the smell of pizza in the hallway. I thought this was a brewery.

Follow the sign. Walk up the stairs. 2nd floor? It felt like they were never-ending, especially since we were only going a step a minute.

We reached the holy land! We paid our $7 a piece for the tour and got our souvenir glass. What they don’t tell you on their website is that you get 4 tokens to try their beers. So in my mind, this was free beer! Yeah! Let’s do this! At 1pm on a Saturday. So what? It’s FREE!

Come to find out later, if you bring a larger beer stein, they will still fill that for you too. Hm, looks like I’m going to have to make a trip back there in the near future.

So this was the Beer Hall. It doesn’t even begin to show how crowded it was. People were having birthday parties there, there were blankets sprawled on the ground where people ate their pizza and played their games. Ohhhh! It all clicked. I just thought this was a brewery tour, not a hang out spot.

We got a beer and started to walk around. The next tour started in a few minutes.

St. Arnold was a saint in the 600′s, who recommended beer instead of water. Way back in those days, water was polluted and would make drinkers gravely ill. Instead, drink beer! It’s cheaper and more nutritious. Sounds good to me, let’s drink!

So I didn’t learn too much on the tour, mostly because I couldn’t hear what the hell our tour guide was saying. But I did get to see the beer making process in action. There was beer fermenting on the floor and this guy wanted to try it. (Ok, so maybe I learned a little.) He got the go ahead from our tour guide and scooped some off the floor.

“It’s not bad. It tastes like beer and bread. Y’all should try it.”

Bleh, no thanks, I’m not going to eat something off the floor. I walked off, back to the beer hall or should I say, beer wall!

Look at that beautiful wall of beer! They were promoting their newest beer Santo, so naturally, I had to try it. I’m not normally a fan of dark beer, but this was fantastic. It’s nothing like BMC–as they call it at Saint Arnold–Bud Miller Coors. This beer is so flavorful and full of life. And even the label is artsy! What’s not to love?

For those of you in Texas, go out and try a St. Arnold Santo!

Are you a beer drinker? What’s your favorite beer?

Project 365: Through Day 21

Day 13 – January 30th

Pupusas! If you haven’t tried these before you don’t know what you’re missing out on. This traditional Salvadorian dish is like a thick tortilla, stuffed with various yummy foods: beans, cheese, pork, or loroco. Or all of the above! Apparently loroco an edible flower native to El Salvador, I had no idea. It’s pretty dang good though! On top is a type of salsa with cabbage, not everyone is a fan of it, but I love it.

Day 14 – January 31st

It’s almost been a week since I’ve been in the house and I’m barely starting to put things up. This piece was a “housewarming” gift from my dad and stepmom when I moved to the apartment. It just fits so well on one of our bookshelves in the living room. A daily reminder: dream.

Day 15 – February 1st

It was one of those mornings at the office. I was dragging ass and had to have my daily cup of coffee.

Day 16 – February 2nd

My old co-worker brought in her baby Blake! Isn’t she just adorable! She poopied her little pants while she was in the office. Yeah, definitely not ready for one of those yet.

Day 17 – February 3rd

Dinner night! We celebrated our 6 month anniversary at Taste of Texas. The food was spectacular! Mr. Hazel Eyes enjoyed the pre-dinner snacks. While you wait, they have soft drinks, popcorn and chips and salsa. Once they seat you (after about 30-45 minutes) they bring you crackers with cream cheese. I’ve never tried quail so we had it as an appetizer. The waiter said it tastes like chicken, but I thought it was far better! Then you get the salad & bread bar while you wait for your steak. You can see my beautiful bacon wrapped center cut filet. YUM! Best date night ever!

Day 18 – February 4th

An interesting ice cream truck sitting in the parking lot at a local Sam’s Club. “Ice Cream Nationwide” it boasts. The other side listed cities of Los Angeles, CA, Houston, TX, Las Vegas, NV and Tampa, FL. That’s a long trip for some ice cream!

Day 19 – February 5th

Finally getting settled into the house. Here’s my odd shaped loveseat with new brown pillows. They were one of my favorite buys from shopping with mom. I’m thinking of going with a European theme for the living room. Hm.

Day 20 – February 6th

Our elevator was out! Look at the floor, definitely not even. Before they taped it off, it opened up like that on my way to lunch. I wasn’t getting on that thing!

Day 21 – February 7th

Margarita at lunch! I got my buzz on! I need to prepare myself for New Orleans this weekend! I was buzzed after one. I don’t think I’m ready!

I Moved In with a Boy!

Yep, me and my boyfriend are “living in sin” as my co-workers say. And ya know what? I don’t care. I’m happy. He’s happy.

Aww, look at OUR new place!

Over the weekend, my mom took me shopping for household items because the house is freakishly big for us. I’m used to my little 2 bedroom apartment with my sister.

Even before that I lived in a 1300 sq. ft. house with my mom and stepdad.. This house is over 1600 sq. ft. and there’s only 2 of us! What am I supposed to do with all that space?! This is the bare, white walled living room.. I didn’t like it before we got all our stuff in there; it’s just so boring!

The dining room is practically empty, as well as 2 of the bedrooms. This is the dining room you see right when you walk in from the front door. I have no idea what to do with it now. The room made the table set look tiny. But, the chairs fit perfectly at the kitchen bar.. so that’s where they sit for the time being. Hm, now maybe I should put a bar in there? Any ideas people?

I seriously have to take a picture of our awkward entryway. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen in a house. My uncle jokingly said, that’s where the statue of the Virgin Mary goes. Mhm, that.

P.S. On the donations thing: last one went to MD Anderson in memory of my Nanny.

A Week’s Worth of Project 365

Dont worry, I haven’t forgotten about the 365 Project–here goes a week of pictures!

Day 6 – January 23rd

My mom’s pup. Well, he still thinks he’s a pup. He was mine until I realized I couldn’t take care of him. Now she won’t give him up since he’s her little baby! What a cute face.

Day 7 – January 24th

Relatively boring day as you can tell; just another day at work. I love my cute little calendar that my boss gave me though. Ooh, and paperclips!

Day 8 – January 25th

My idea of packing: sitting on the couch, looking at the box. My junk was everywhere…

Day 9 – January 26th

My bosses at Happy Hour on Thursday. They’re married, can you tell? They are pretty awesome couple to work for, if I say so myself.

Day 10 – January 27th

Mr. Hazel Eyes and I moved into a house! This was the day before move-in. He was waiting for the utilities to be turned on.

Day 11 – January 28th

Our living quarters for the first night. A mattress and some pillows in the living room. It was kind of like a camp out, except with TV!

Day 12 – January 29th

My wonderful Mom already brought me a housewarming gift! Dr Pepper with REAL sugar. Who could ask for more?

It’s been a hectic week, but I managed to take a picture a day.. with a couple of the pictures being at the very end of the day.

Ask and You Shall Receive

Yesterday I received this email from our property manager at work:

“Many of you have seen Lydia here during the day as our day porter as well as at night.

Yesterday her husband died at home and she needs our help if you are inclined. She has no family and has no money for the funeral. If you would like to help, you can make out a check to Lydia or bring cash and give it to Lisa at the KW reception desk, she will take it to her.”

It’s amazing how situations arise when you ask for them. So my first $25 donation of the year went to our lady who cleans our offices. I had never known her name or anything about her because she only speaks Spanish. She does not understand any English except for a friendly hello. Even though we have the language barrier, she is one of the nicest people–always offering a welcoming smile.

I remember one instance when the lights went out in the whole building. We went outside our office to see if all the lights were off and check if everyone was okay. That’s when we heard someone’s muffled screams. There was someone trapped on the elevator who was crying for help; it was Lydia. I understood what she was saying, how she was trapped in the elevator and how hot it was getting. But unfortunately, I don’t speak Spanish; instead I found some who did. He tried to calm her nerves, telling her help was on the way. We finally found the maintenance guy, Manego (mah-nay-go), who was able to get the elevator doors open and help her out since it was stuck between floors. She was crying and shaking. All I could do was give her a hug.

Now I’m being given the opportunity to do lend more than a hug, a monetary donation toward her husband’s funeral. She has no other family. There’s no one else to help and afterwards, she’s going to be alone. It just makes you grateful for what you have…

Here’s another story to tug at your heart strings from Stay At Home Babe.

*UPDATE*

I just found out that my company also donated money to Lydia–$100. Proves that some people still care about the well-being of others.
